Dengue Fever, which is a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people, is quite common in Thailand and neighboring countries. During June - October every year, the disease is widespread as most people did not understand the danger of this disease and lacked awareness in self-prevention.
COERR Mae Sarieng then organized the campaign of Dengue Fever prevention in the two Temporary Shelters in Mae Hong Son Province’s Sob Moei District, i.e., Ban Mae Lama Luang Temporary Shelter on 17 June 2023 in which 147 children and youth of 77 females and 70 males participated and Ban Mae La Oon Temporary Shelter on 8 and 15 July 2023 in which 204 children and youth of 123 females and 81 males participated.
The campaign activities consisted of two sessions: first session was for camp-based refugee staff and youth trainers to explain about the objectives of the event and provided information about the danger of Dengue fever that 100 – 400 million people were infected with this disease each year. The dengue fever condition could be either mild or critical and life-threatening. Due to the seriousness of dengue fever disease, prevention and control measures of disease are recommended.
The next session was walking campaign conducted by COERR staff together with children and youth volunteers. They started walking from COERR Social Service Center and campaigning along the way until they finished at community areas like school and sport fields. During their march, message was given how to control dengue larvae such as empty or turn over items that hold water, i.e., tires, buckets, flower pots, trash containers, etc.
In addition, abate sand bags were distributed to household that need to put abate in their water jars. Children and youth were well cooperative. They learned how to protect themselves from mosquito borne diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, etc. They were proud of taking part in this useful community activities that created awareness and learned the importance of disease prevention and control.
